We have a client that is interested in a retaining wall, but we would have to remove approximately 3 feet of roots along the side walk to do so.

What impact will this have on the trees??

Thankyou for any help you could give.
Kris

Can you supply some more information? What type of Maple, size, how close to the area of excavation, any type of grade change over existing root system from the retaining wall, etc. The more info the better. With that said, to give proper advice I would need to see the site. Hire a QUALIFIED arborist. Eric

Hey, Kris -- Like Eric says, your question requires a lot more info than you put into your original post of Feb. 6.

It can make a BIG difference whether you expect to take 3' of roots off of a 3" caliper tree as compare to a 24" dbh specimen -- but how does one know it's 3' of roots?

Also, when Eric mentioned contacting a "Qualified" Arborist -- that's a good idea, too. Usually by "Qualified" we mean to ask enough questions that you are confident the guy you are consulting has reasonable experience with your type of situation.

So, I hope this forum has helped you and your project is going well for you.
