Mastermind Meets The Echo CS-520

My friend Wes (wyk) has prodded me about doing an Echo CS-520 because it's a clamshell design. He evidently thinks I'm afraid of such things.

Well.......as luck would have it one of our members asked me to do a woods port on one of these little saws.

I have to tell you guys when I pulled this saw apart and put a degree wheel on it I was surprised.

The biggest issue with a clamshell. The damn things must be totally taken apart to get to the goods.

How many clammies have you seen with closed quad transfer ports???

The port timing duration on the intake and exhaust both were in the upper 140°s with 20° Blowdown.

I added 10° to both and raised and widened the upper transfers. I didn't touch the lowers.

I opened up the windows in the piston some....

After widening the exhaust I added an expansion step.

I make these "special" sockets for different clutches. Beating on a clutch is just wrong to me.

I like this air filter setup very well. :msp_thumbup:

After I fired it up it wouldn't fatten up enough on top end. I had to go back into the carb. The fuel pump diaphragm was bad, after running the carb through the ultrasonic cleaner a few trips and a kit it seems to be running very well. I forgot to snap a pic of my muffler mod so I'll post that and a video tomorrow.

echo did it right with that kind of filter,,
i buy good used impact sockets at the flea markets to make my clutch tools,,
can't wait to see the vid of the 520,,, i know how good the 530 i had ran,, it should be a good improvment

It ran very well to me stock. To be honest I was pretty damn surprised. :msp_ohmy:

What compression are you getting?? Any thoughts about a welded popup? I had a CS-520, but sold it because the wife said I had too many saws, LOL!
I've got a Lincoln TIG welder and want to do a welded popup... just haven't had the testicular fortitude to do so.

It ran very well to me stock. To be honest I was pretty damn surprised. :msp_ohmy:

They run good stock, real good with a simple muff modd. This one should really run. Nice porting to start with. Steve

+1 My CS-510 with a muffler mod is a strong runner. Equal to either of my closed port 55's, with a broader power band and cuts better heavily loaded. I run 18" .325 set-ups on all three of them. Looking forward to the results.....Cliff

I don't know if that style filter is the best idea or not. My 530 and 680 has it and it is full of dust while my 600P (and the new 500P) has the flat filter and has hardly any dust on it in the same amount of time. I have a hunch Echo made some strides in the pre-cleaning department and getting away from this automotive style air filter. Anyway, Echos run great.

That's a fine play on words right there! LMAO!!!

I haven't checked the compression on it. Not to much I can do about though.

It has a domed piston BTW if milling the base and cutting the squish band was a possibility, it would be capable of some serious compression.

I tend to shy away from anything over 195psi on a work saw, after that I don't see much in the way of gains.

I'm starting to like some of these Echo saws. I need to pick up a CS-500 of my own, I'm thinking there is a bunch to be gained in that saw. It may need more carb but that can be done.

BTW that's going to be the limiting factor on this 520 as well. It's wearing a WT series Walbro and they only go so big.
