Yep, going all the way down to the cases. Taking out the bearings and crank to see if overheated. At this point, only thing left that may be good is the cases, the crank, the fuel tank assembly, and the carburetor. And some of the ignition stuff, and the plastic covers.

The AV buffers do need replacement also. The list is quite large now, and getting bigger.

Hopefully you are on good terms with a dealer, who will price it all out. It ain't going to be cheap, so a discount might be in order. Personally, the devil is in the details, and it's all gots to be taken apart and everything to be inspected.

Cylinder pictures here, post 15. I have a new OEM cylinder to install - thank you to av8or3!

I can't find my flywheel removal tool, so this is a stopping point for now. Ordered a new one and it's due in the first week Feb.
I'll start back with the disassembly then. In the meantime, cleaning up parts and surveying the damage. Then putting together a parts list.

I'll post up the parts list when I get it done.

I'll take this list to my dealer on Monday and see how this prices out. This list is based on the cases, carb, fuel tank assy, and crankshaft being reusable. Pretty much all rubber pieces, the clutch, the oil system, and the bearings are on this list.

The cost of repair parts ordered and received so far is approximately $550.00, and this does not include anything on the list above.
 
Has anyone changed between the AV System "normal" mounts and the AV system "hard" mounts? Were there any benefits of one AV system versus the other?

AV system normal:

So, $882.63 plus the $550.00 I already have in it equals $1432.63.

For the parts not available, my dealer thinks they are obsolete or may be available but with lead times up to one year (German made parts not available due to situation in Europe that is causing materials shortages).

An expensive lesson on the $550 already spent. I'd just put it on the shelf. Someday you may come across another needing parts. Never fails that someone drives over their saw or a tree falls on it, and you've got all the plastics ready to house a good condition motor.

At this point, I am leaning heavily towards just keeping the good parts as spares for the 888 clone that I just built.

Other option is to repair with AM parts. I haven’t decided yet.

Stihl Southeast parts seem to be 35-50% MORE than in other regions, like Ohio (Bryan Equipment territory). Got any friends / relatives in the midwest? You can also check John Deere dealers as they seem to be more reasonable in the Southeast. In the end Stihl dealers are allowed to charge whatever they want for parts... Just like car dealers.

As far as AM, I'm going to see how the 888 I built holds up before I decide on using AM parts with the 880.

Yeah, just wait a bit. Someone is bound to drop a tree on their 880, sooner then later. I had a neighbor that ran over my 461, and luckily only tweek it. Later he ran over his own saw, which cost him some extra coin. I had a tree graze my field bag and wiped out a good number of costly things. Luckily my spare saw dodged that ill fated mishap. It happens...
 
After removing the flywheel, crankshaft, and the crank bearings, I was pleasantly surprised. All rotating mass appears good. Crank main bearing shows no indication of wear beyond normal and the endplay is not even able to be felt.

The bearings appear to be okay, considering their age. FEA seems to indicate no damage to the bearings or the crankshaft, so that is a huge relief.

The only issue was the retainers are somewhat brittle, but again, they are from around 2004, 2005 - so that is to be expected.

There is a little discoloration and staining, but overall this bearing is just showing it's age. No ingestion damage, and no marks from loose parts. The races show no brinelling or fretting, nor do the ball bearings.
