I would like to ID some hardwood. It has thin bark, is pretty hard to split and the heartwood is brown on the inner part. Also tight growth rings. It has a musty smell like walnut, but it is not Walnut. Hard maple or some type of Hickory? Thanks

Probably Hickory, but I always struggle with being more than a reasonable guess based on a round with bark and a split. I personally like to see leaves, know the area and topology, oh yea, and a botanists tag on the side helps too.

This was a known hickory double trunk I took down for a friend. He gave me the wood, which was nice, till I started splitting it.
