You're looking for a 60cc saw period! Your dads 028 is about 50ccs and while newer saws can be a little more powerful with the same displacement as old saws... You'll feel lack luster about cutting "bigger wood" with 50-55ccs.
To compliment your dads saw a 60 cc saw with 20in bar is the most common combination for a wood cutting saw. 360/036/034super 361, 362... And maybe a 310 or 390. The last two farmboss models are the only way to go. A new 290 is a underpowered over weight brick. Once you bump to the 310 or 390 you'll be happier. All this being said I'd look at the first 5 models I suggested. Find a good used saw. There are plenty of reputable builders on here with 60cc rebuilt saws for sale. Remember to get some PPE and have fun!
