I am getting things around to build a splitter and I have a few questions.

#1 Is 8hp big enough for a 16gpm pump?

#2 How big of a hydraulic tank am I going to need?

Thanks for any help.

1. single stage pump? it might be.

2. what size cylinder?

My 8hp Briggs I/C ohv pulls my 16gpm 2 stage pump just fine. I have a 4.5" cyl. and a 12 gal hyd. tank. I get 11 second cycle times. Hope this helps. Good luck on your build.:givebeer: :givebeer: :givebeer:

2 stage pump

4" cylinder

i've seen guys run 3 gallons on that setup. i personally wouldn't run anything smaller than a 5 gallon rez and make sure the system is charged before topping off the tank.

Is it worth the money to go with a 16gpm pump? I see that they are about 60 dollars more than the 11gpm pump.

8hp engine with a 16 gpm 2-stage pump will be fine .

The size of the reservoir depends on the shape of the tank. The greater the distance between supply and return the less capacity needed. Timberwolf TP-2 has a 16 gpm pump with a 7.5 gallon reservoir which is typical for splitters that use a combination tank and axle. A tank that is a square cube are much less efficient. The more compact the tank the more capacity needed, sometimes as much as double.
