Hello, I’m new to the site. Have been reading this site for a little
wile and thought it was time to join in. So here it goes. I have
some eastern red cedar that I’m thinking about milling with
my chain saw. It is a 036 that I bought new it has had less 20
tanks of gas run through it. Is this saw big enough for 10 to 16 in.
Dia. cedar? With out being overly hard on the saw. Any suggestions
On what brand of mill to buy and cheapest place to buy. Any and all
Information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Gary

Sure it's big enough. It will be slower, but... I would use either my Granberg Small Log Mill or Logosol Timberjig for the smaller stuff. I actually prefer the Timberjig.

The other thing to remember is to use a good ripping chain. Sharpen it often, like after every 3rd cut. Then you can usually just run the file across it once or twice and keep it sharp. Takes a lot longer and is harder if you let the chain get dull. Keep it sharp and sharpen before it gets dull.

Enjoy

Howdy and Welcome.

Cheap? Are you any good at building stuff? I built my first 72" CSM for about $75 out of pocket. If not, you can get a 24" alaskan mill on ebay for about $150.

Welcome Trigger, your 036 is big enough for 16" redcedar, which is not a particularly hard wood to mill. Get yourself a 36" alaskan mill from Baileys and a loop of ripping chain for that saw (around $200 total), and you're in business. A 60cc saw like that will even do harder wood if you take it easy and don't go much over that 16" dia. Ive used a Husky 365 to mill (similar saw), just took it real easy. For larger logs, you will need a more powerful saw, no way around it. Ask more questions for details if you need to, there is a LOT of help on this forum if you tap into it.

WARNING: MILLING WOOD IS ADDICTING
