No one of those glow in the dark lime green saws is enough.I only needed the parts to get the old heifer running. I think I will stay with the big 3,stihl,husq,Jreds.Cheers.

Thanks for the comments. I have been a Poulan fan for a long time.Ya"ll need to not take yourselves so seriously.I can tell this 3400 is a well made machine. But I still like the Euro. saws. All I will say is.......whatever. I have learned many things here and appreciate everyone.Even the one's that try to jump to conclusions.......Cheers.

Pierreg,

We weren't trying to beat up on you pardner.
To borrow a line from Larry The Cable Guy,

Talking bad about the green in a thread titled "The Poulan Thread"
or expressing you preferrence for the Euro saws,
"Is kinda like yelling "Walmart Sucks" in a trailer park!!!"LOL

I was (and I'm sure the others were) just trying to let you know that you can carry an old "Lime Green" saw anywhere in the world and hold your head up, because they take a backseat to NOBODY!

I hope to see a lot more posting from you in the future, especially after you put the smackdown on a few euro-saws with that old 3400.

4200 & 5400

The last time I looked the decals said 69 cc. on the 4200 & 85 cc on the
5400. I bought the 4200 new & the 5400 was a loggers saw
I bought for $100 about 25 years ago. I put a new piston in it about
that time, carb kit about 15 years later, 24" B&C 10 years after that That old saw is heavy, but has a lot of torque & power.
I have most of Feb. 2009 ice storm wood cleaned up or give away
using 50 cc. saws, about time for the old Poulans on the big wood. The even older 361 may get a little use too.

Well I don't know why you keep saying the 5400 is heavy. Its a big 85cc chainsaw. I have a feeling any 85cc saw will be heavy to you from the way you put it.

For what its worth according to the Husqvarna website a new 85cc 385XP weighs 15.5lbs.

I weighed a clean 5200 the other night and it weighed 16.5 lbs. Right at 1lb heavier then the 385 and theres not one piece of plastic on the 5200.

Look at it this way, the 5200 weighs about the same as a 60cc Mac 610 from the same time frame.

It's just hard to argue with success.
I'll be willing to bet that in the Poulan Lovers Group membership there are at LEAST 3 pickup truck loads of 3400-3700-4000 Poulans that are ready and able to cut a load of wood on a moments notice.
Many of those same saws were cutting wood before the current owners were even born and will be cutting for generations to come.

Mike, Better make that a Semi, I'v got at least a pickup load of them that all run myself..LOL

I will have to admit that I'm older than all my saws, by a long shot.
But, Poulan was making saws in 1947, so there are Poulans out there older than me..

Gregg,

Mark,

When I was over at your place, I had no idea you interested in the *other* Poulans. I also have a 655 you might want to check out. The 6000 definitely has more personality. Both 100cc saws, night and day differences.

I start midnights this weekend, but am off next weekend. I'll get with you later.

Chris B.

I'll be waiting!!

gettin another 4000!!

I'm so excited. I found a guy selling a 4000 for $150 last night on CL. Has a 16" and 18" bar and chains. He just rebuilt the carb and bought it new! Its a little more than I usually pay but I think its worth it. Pics later.

Joe all I can say is you got a much better CL then I do.

Better get it quick, if it's good, its well worth that.

Yeah, its been slim pickins lately, found the saw by accident looking at snowblowers. I spoke with the guy an hour ago and told him "I'll be there!" This will be my second 4000, and this one is for sure. I made a mistake, he has a 20" bar not an 18". I'm wondering if its a newer model or older one...

Got some more Parts that may interest you all will be taking images and tracking down what the parts fit and posting them on my site and give you all first grabs

as well as discounted price

For starters some of the items are Sprockets OEM Poulan Sprockets

Muffler Mods

Just wondering if you guys/gals that own a 3400 have done a muffler mod to them? I'm thinking of doing it to one of mine but not sure what design to do. So, I'm asking for design ideas. Post some pics if you don't mind.

The one Mark does which is kind of a copy of the 4200 muffler is by FAR the nicest one I've seen.
I've done a couple and they respond quite well.

I got the 4000!!!

And all I can say is WOW. Really guys, the pics dont do it justice, this saw looks new, the only wear is on the clutch side. Might have to commission Gregg to make me a sticker for that side! The guy rebuilt the carb and it started on the 3rd pull cold. This needs NOTHING. It even has a replacable tip windsor bar, along with a cheesy 20" oregon. He bought it in '84 new for $600. Thats alot for a saw even now!! But they were pro saws in every sense of the word. He bought it to "clear a little brush", then it sat for 25 years. Yeah a 4000 that was maybe had 5 tanks thru it to clear brush. I didnt have to pull the muffler but hey I had to look. See for yourself. My best score yet, I think.

no "glove" wear at all

I agree Joe that might be your nicest score yet and that's saying a lot, you've made a lot of nice scores. I looked at a 3400 last night that is in pretty good cosmetic condition but it doesn't run. It has good compression so probably just needs a fuel line and carb kit. He is asking 60 for. If it was a 3700 or 4000 I would have bought it. He wouldn't take less so I am thinking it over.

Thanks guys. John, $60 seems a little high. I paid $50 for my 3400 (same situation as you) and a Micro. Id have offered him $50 and let him sit on it. If its nice, might be worth it.
