Opinions on old Craftsman 3.7 saws

I am going to look at a old red Craftsman 3.7 chainsaw. It needs work I am told, but I just might buy it for a project saw. I have heard good things about these saws, not sure who made it as Craftsman don't make anything.

If my calculations are correct 3.7ci is about 60cc, and that's not a slouch.

Anyway I might need a source for parts and just wondered what people thought about these saws.

Which red one? One is roper, one is poulan.

I'm not sure, the picture I saw doesn't look like a Poulan. Probably a Roper, how would I know for sure? Anything thing to look for?

Ropers are OK but not the greatest, parts are so so depending on which model 3.7 you have. I have and early model Ranger, hi compression and a beast to pull and way to loud.

If gas tank leaks, split the case and reseal.

Depends on how accurate 3.7 is:
3.7 x 2.54^3 = 60.632 cc
But the 3.7 could be anywhere from 3.65 to 3.75. I think most guys round the displacement to 61 cc. Here's a grey and black Craftsman 3.7. Does yours look like this one?

....Seriously though. I've had one of the green version Craftsman's before. Nice running saws. I was impressed.

It would be a whole lot easier for the o.p. to put up a pic, or to use Bing or Google to look at pics.
But then again, it will be a long winter.
