I have two ornamental pear trees on the north side of my house. This summer I noticed two things: 1) bark peeling; and 2) a few dark brown leaves. The trees appear to be healthy otherwise.

Is it normal for these trees to peel as they grow or could I have a insect/disease problem?

What could the dark brown leaves indicate?

Possible solutions?

This is the bark of calary pear. It is said to crackle more then peel by those who classify.

If it is sloughing off and you see wood, there is a problem. If there is younger bark, this is just sheading of dead layers of bark ad the tree grows.

One will usualy see some leaf spot during the year. If in a drought many trees will shead leaves. It is when whole branches, or large percentages of foliage go that you need be concerned.
