Just how well do you clean your firebox?

I got most of the big chunks of creosote scraped off but still have a thin layer of that shiny stuff in some places. It is about as thick as a thick coat of paint.

Is it important to remove every bit of creosote?

I've been scraping for a couple hours today. Must have enhaled about a gallon of dust and I was even wearing a mask.

So how well do you guys scrape you fire box before coating with diesel and motor oil?

I just let the fire go out

And sometime before next winter I might shovel out the ashes.. But mine is 1/2 inch steel firebox.

Closing down the OWF

I just use a ice scraper (nice long handle) and scrape off whatever will come off during a good once over. I don't kill myself. Then I give it a good clean out and remove all ash, scraping anything that sticks. Throw that in the scrap pile and light a cigar.

A guy I know who's been running his for 10 years sprays the inside with diesel fuel for the summer. Not something I do, but thought I would mention.
