Yeah the palm thing is new to me, and ......well........THEY SUCK! Ya gotta wear body armor runnin that stuff thru the chipper. Mexican fan palms have these WICKAAAAD sharp curved hook style thorns, they, my friends, will jack u up. Get one that has a few years worth of growth on it and you may find yourself invaded by rats while you work. The majority of trees out here are no fun, there is only a few trees that I like. Morton Bay Figs get hu freakin mungus and grow really cool and rainbow eucs are amazing to look at. But the rest, blah. There are some decent sized sycamores here and there. So far, my fave tho is a podocarpus, idunno why, but I like that tree. There is a tree here called the floss silk (is that right socali's) It was created, strait up, by the devil!

@ Mike, I didnt bid it per crew, guy told me where I needed to be, I looked at the numbers and said I could make it work, so I ran with that number. I think I was just used to fill the file, to prove that there where 3 bids, so then he could hand it to his bud.............what EVA!

Have a couple more big eucs that we are supposed to do. One is for Caltrans on I-8. They want us to do it as fast as possible cause they need to shut down a pretty busy
on-ramp. So we are going to bomb the hell out of the top and bring in a 40 ton for the stick. I am eager to do more, as I know that operator is a pro, so I want to learn as much as possible from him before he retires.

Going today to a house that has been on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens mag a bunch of times. We prune a hedge for her, thing is valued at over 150g's WHAAAAAAT!!! A HEDGE WORTH ...WHAAAAAAAT!!! Only in SoCal! She has flammin gay neighbors, she says that hedge is worth a lot more to her as the last thing she wants to see is a bunch of gay guys doing it in their hot tub, LOL. This lady is a trip.

Next question. We may be planting a 40ft palm with a 48" box. I was going to dig the hole with a mini ex, then us a crane to set the tree. What kind of straps should I use, nervous about tearing the thing up.

Scott, what kind of palm,,Canary, reclinata,? Do you have to give a warranty for 1 year? We sub that stuff out. Actually cheaper because of the warranty. If it doesn't make it the first year, the sub takes it.

Well, we came in at second bidder on the 40+ palms, thought we had it? Dude tells me that he wants me to do the job and tells me where I need to be on the price! I'm thinkin "Awesome" He tells me yesterday that the guy who won it was about 15g's cheaper!!! WTF!!! That means he is doing the whole job for about 500 a tree, stumps dug out, on a bank, next to a canal full of bad water. Dump fees, travel time to and from....... U guys know! Well, I wish him luck! Damn! I wanted that one, would have been fun.

It sounds like they have a private dump somewhere.

Chinese silk floss!

Ya I've heard some stories making me think they can be a pain. It's amazing how different it is from here to there. I could make a killing letting you guys dump at my place we are moving in 20 acres here in 30 days. We need the room to run a tub grinder so we don't irritate anyone. Do they run palms through tubs?

One of my climbers worked for Bartlett in CA and he always told me about the carbon monoxide getting trapped in the canopy and guys passing out.

I love the paint job on beasts buddies k boom.

That is the first I ever heard of the carbon monoxide thing, and I'v climbed 1000's of palm, rats, hawks, owls, raccoon, possums, bats a plenty. but no CO. Some times its so hot and stuffy up under those fronds you feel like you might pass out.
All my friends stuff has the same flames, even his bobcat and excavator. His trucks really do stand out. What's a shame is his Kboom truck won't be legal any more under calif. smog laws with out a 15000.00 upgrade, same with his chipper(bc1800) and turbo diesel stumpgrinder. Sucks.

The CO stuff could be BS only ever heard it from him sitting in a truck not sure how much weight it holds.

Boy sgreanbeans, why would anyone want to plant a Mexican fan palm, it's the weed of the palm family IMHO. Wouldn't be to difficult to plant your self. Their very hardy, unlike some palms.
You have to prop em up after planting and carrot top em. On a high value palm some kind of warranty could well be worth it.
Fan palms grow so fast(Washingtonia robusta) you could plant a smaller one and it'll grow 10 ft. in a few years. They get a 100 ft tall.

Several years ago in Beaumont up in Riverside, they planted about 100 robusta's ,,, all propped with 2x4's. Looked weird.

You would be hard pressed to tear up or scar a fan palm, a cable choker would be fine. The biggest mistakes people make planting any kind of palm is planting them to deep and not watering them enough tell their established.
