many older saws never offerred a choice of filters so you put up with them as they came. Newer saws often list the ability to remove contaminants in terms of microns.
The fine screen filters are often used in cold weather and snow; there isn't a lot of abrasive dust while snow is on the ground. Flocked/felt filters for the rest of the year.
