Here's a few pics a saw Jon's doing. He's tearing down, cleaning, and then reassembling the old girl with new Nachi bearings and OEM seals and gaskets. When he gets the bottom end buttoned back up I'll grind on her some.

I'll add more to this thread as work progresses.

Not a bad looking saw at all.







A new OEM air filter is a pleasant thing to find when you're tearing one down.









 






And that's where she is right now. Jon wants to run it stock to be sure the ignition and carb are both sound.....then tear it back down for porting.......I figure he know what's best. :D
 
We finally got an ultrasonic cleaning tank that's large enough to do case halves fully submerged........thank goodness.

Now after some cleaning.

I have a question: is there any advantage at all to those long cylinder retaining studs? I've never seen anything like them.

My only thought would be that the potential of heat expansion causing problems is greater, since the bolts and cylinder are two different metals. Kinda like how you see mufflers with long bolts losing fasteners.

Just curious. As I said, I've never seen anything like them, so I just wanted to ask.

I figure the jug would expand more because of the material..........that might be why they don't use em anymore. :laugh:

The 041 - 076 all are built this way.

They emphasize several times in the 075/076 workshop manual about proper torque on the studs...otherwise the jug expands and pulls them right out of the case.

Really?????? I've worked on many 041's, 045's, 056's. I've never seen that before, but maybe my memory is just that bad :dizzy:.

Ever seen that cylinder-retaining stud/nut setup before in any saw besides these Stihls? Just curious.

The early 041 doesn't have them. I believe it was the last of that series with the 48mm bore that switched over to the pass-through studs.

Some of the karters running methanol engines are getting so much pressure out of them that they build a "cage" that goes around the entire engine.

I've never been around any karts but is that "cage" to hold the shrapnel when they grenade?
