redbud loosing bark

Beautiful ,healthy(?) eastern redbud, 3yrs old has bark coming off at ground level and spreading upwards. Normally smooth bark is checked and rough, moving upwards. Is it doomed? If so why? Many Buds now with few leaves coming out.

BArk roughens with age normally. Look for canker--Botryosphaeria etc. posting a picure would help a lot.
