Hey everyone, first post here, the other day I picked up a remington super 754, I'm tearing it down and trying to go over the ignition system, but I'm having a time getting the flywheel off. Is there a secret to getting this thing off? I don't want to break anything but if I just need to muscle it that's fine too.

Put nut back on and twit until shady is just below surface of the nut. Set saw up right properly and take a hammer tap nut with swift blows not to hard. The flywheel will come off. It helps to spray shaft with a little wd40 or penetrating oil and let it sit 20 min first

Or, do it right and use a 3 bolt puller. Harmonic balance/steering wheel puller--not particularly expensive--and an assortment of bolts/screws/washers.

Screwing the nut back on is no guarantee you won't mess up the threads smacking with a hammer. My method is generally to tighten up the puller and hit that with a hammer.

Well correct if you have a puller use it. I have been doing saws a while and have never had a issue with tapping the nut. Some people tap the magnet on fly wheel with a screw driver applying a little pressure to back side of flywheel.

Most saws have a means to pull with a puller of some sort--3 bolt puller, or Stihl type that screws in. My Solo Twin uses the flywheel nut that acts a puller when flipped over. Some old saws have a captive nut that pull the flywheel as you unscrew it. Lot of the old manufacturers put some thought into that stuff.

I have a special 3 bolt puller just for those fairbanks-morse style flywheels.

Thanks for the advice everyone, if I can't get it to budge, I'll look into a puller. Need to add one to the shop anyway. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a special trick for these 754s.

Hey guys, wanted to update, I got the flywheel off, just took a couple extra taps, thanks for the advice. Here's some more pictures of the saw, I have one more question about removing the clutch, are the threads holding it reversed? That's to say, is it righty loosey for taking off clutch? I have a rope stop set up, but want to make sure I'm turning the right way.

Not trying to discourage you in any way, but be extremely careful with what you have. A quick search on EBay revealed there may not be an abundance of parts available should you need them.

I appreciate the words of caution, I made a point of going slow on this project, taking time to soak everything in penetrating oil, it's been a couple days but the saw is completely apart, the only casualty were the piston rings, they both snapped while I was trying to get them off. I'm hoping they're not too hard to replace, piston has a diameter of 52mm and rings are 1.5mm thick, if anyone knows where to find an easy replacement, I'd be grateful.
