How should I remove a root ball

Hi,
I have a question about the removal of a root ball.
I had a 100yr (40" diameter) old oak tree cut down from my yard because it was not healthy and hanging over the house.
Now, I want to remove the root ball completely and level my front yard.
I am going to be renting a John Deere 4300 backhoe and was wondering if anyone had any advice on the digging and removal process of the root ball.

Thanks in advance,
Brent

I would not advise using a backhoe to remove a rootball/stump of that size or any size. Call a few licensed stump grinders in your area, grinding cost will probably be the same as the rental of the backhoe and not leave you with a big hole in the yard and a large chunk of root and debris to dispose of. Stump grindings can be graded into new landscape, mulch beds ect.

I agree. You can get a stump like that ground for about $2.50 an inch of diameter, then all you have left is a nice pile of mulch and a hole to fill with soil.
You can use a back hoe, but you are going to have a huge mess and a huge stump to dispose of.
