Here's a good overview, with pictures, of the not quite local base. The article has a paywall but if you haven't read much of the Seattle Times, it might let you read and look at the pictures.

What they don't mention is all the aches and pains that show up later in life from doing this very long. Or the injuries. It used to be said that to get a permanent position on the Okanogan NF, you needed to be an injured smokejumper. Legs and hips get broken. Then, later in life, back problems. knees, etc.
