ive never understood that line of thinking either.

i wouldnt really put the 346 and 5105 in the same category either even if they are both 50cc saws.
346 excels as a limbing saw but it lacks the low end grunt to be a decent felling saw. which saw is best always comes down to what you plan on doing with it which troll doesnt seem to understand.

I think Troll is spot on re: handling and balance. I didn't believe him intially, then I bought some 346s and sold my 5100s even though they always had more grunt - 5100 was happy with 17" 3/8", the 346 was not, but I run 13" .325" most of the time on the 40-50cc saws, so the 346 won out for me. Then this one came along, heated handles, so I'm back in the 5100 game. I think this will make a great firewood saw and falling saw, and with a longer bar, will make a great backpack saw for trail clearing work.

Did the 5105C replace the 5105SC, or are they both available? Also to clarify, is the 5105SC coil available and does it fit on the 5105C? I've read your post a couple times and wasn't 100% sure.

The PS-5105C replaced the PS-5105SC.

If you bolt the 5105SC coil onto a 5105C Easy Start the saw will be out of time.

181-143-210 = PS-5105SC 14,500 RPM Coil

Do you have any advice for the owner of this 5100 on how to help it live a long and happy life?

Tune it right. Most of the 5100's that I have seen were just tuned to lean. Stock they like to be tuned 13800-14200. Not 14500 like they were advertised.

I started selling dolly after the 5100's were long gone but I still see plenty of them coming through the shop and with their reputation I tuned them in wood, not with a tach and that is where most end up at. I usually go ahead and richen them up a tad more...13700- 13800 or so to give a cushion.

Carb replacement is a fairly common thing to them as well. Not holding a tune/odd running characteristic has always been a carb issue not an air leak in my experience with them

The Red 13,500 coil and a new carb will make a nice running 5100.

I've got a 5100 here running a red coil, new carb, and I even put a cat muffler on it. It's the fastest 5100 I have.

Red = 13,500
Gray = 14,500

20151223_105303.jpgThis is what I do to the 5105 cat muffler. Its quite easy to get the cat out through the exhausted port. Drill 1/2 inch hole in the cat through the port and take the rest out with a pair of players and a twisting motion.
I then open the front original port and grind out all the tube I can reach. Then put another port on the clutch s I de as shown. I need screens in everything because of the National Forest around me and their regs.
I find this muffler more friendly than the older one to work with. Its three parts make it easy to work on....thank goodness as I think it would be a nightmare to split.

Any part # for that Carb?? And are they redaly available?

Dolmars are a smooth running saw, yet the newer ones have taken on the more space aged rounded look? I would love to find an old 166 in good to excellent shape. They claimed that it produced 12+ horsepower! I like all of the big boys .090, 3120, 5200, 125C, 910CV, yet my perferred saw for firewood cutting was the 272xp Husky? It was fast, ran great, not too heavy, and recovered quickly. I wished I had one in a box. Id ship it to you and let you trim the jug skirt a little and do the porting. Top it off with the Snellerized magic. I was impressed with it already. Id bet it would be enveious! Do you know how to install the H screw into a WG carb on a 3120xp? Which would be the better Walbro to do this too of the WG2, 6, 8, 10a. I have a WG9 on the saw. I also have a WGA 10-1a, and a WG2-1 for the 3120 of 1988. Husqvarna still has it available! Took me tons of PDFs and number crossing but I found it. They claim it has no chocke. Yet when I blew up its serial and diagram it shows to be exactly like the rest of the WG walbros but with a H and L bleed air screw and not just the H fixed bleed air. Some claim with a little time the newer carbs can be made this way. Just have not found anyone that has the knowledge yet. Just talk of it. Would you know of who may help me?
