As stated, ripping is cutting along the grain of the wood, instead of across the grain as done in felling and bucking. It is normally associated with chainsaw milling of lumber, or splitting tough blocks of firewood. In logging operations, it is sometimes even necessary in extreme cases of very oversize wood to have to rip it so the yarding equipment or helicopter can move it. This is not a frequent occurrence on most operations however.
