Try a new piston in it first, measure the clearance with a feeler gauge, if its over.003 then its a bit worn. I have seen saws run for many firewood seasons though with clearances greater than.003, depends on how many hours one really expects the saw to last and how much money one wants to put into it.

Is there anyway to tell if a 044 is 10mm or 12mm with out looking at the crank? I picked up a running 044 off CL for a $100 and its a early one forsure , serial number is x132102512 , I gave the number to a member he and he could not find anything on it , so thought id ask here , also here are a few pics

That’s a 12mm.

Can tell by the case.

I’ll see if I can find a pic.
Thanks for the pic and info , i got it cheap becsuse the guy could not keep it running , so i broight it home expecting to rebuild the carb or replace the intake boot or something , but i set the carb to factory settings and started right up and ran fine , just need to buy a new tach and fine tune it

So I split the cases and popped out t bearings, both were in pretty bad shape... again thanks for the advice... I will attach pics... new bearings going in tomorrow after a dishwasher ride!

Sure appears to be.

The casting above the oil fill PLUS the crank confirms it.

The lower rod end of the 10mm cranks is machined, on the 12mm it’s cast or just forged with no machining. It’s more “bulbous” than the 10mm.

Got the saw back together. Saw sounds sweet and has some serious throttle response. Did some port work but did not touch the factory port window shape on either side. Just widened and smoothed things out and made the muffler/gasket match. Running it with a fat mix and high rich jetting and after an hour or so ill make it sing! I hope the video I attached works!

That worn plating by the port going to be a problem? I have one sitting here just like that.

I would need to have it in my hands before recommending it to be used but I have run cylinders like that on my own saws without problems. If the rings cross over the area it is of more concern.
