This does not seem to be so simple, my IPL for the 044 (1997-10 (1997-06) lists the 5mm fan housing with rewind starter as 1128 080 2104 and just the fan housing as 1128 080 1812. Although it has all the part numbers for the older version 4mm starter (screws, nameplate, rope, starter grip), it does not give a separate number for the acutal fan housing.

Now i did check my old school made in west germany 4mm bolt version versus an old metal tag 5mm bolt version, and the fan housings were both 1128 084 1000 I wonder if its the same part but they drill a bigger size hole for the 5mm.

Stihl Media Cat uses 1128 080 2104 for just the 4mm fan housing sans any other parts and 1128 080 1812 for the bare 5mm fan housing, all the rest of the parts have separate parts numbers on there.

The small hole early fan housing will work if the holes are drilled out, all the inner working parts carry the same part numbers.

One thing I have learned while working on Stihl saws, the parts that have a number cast into them are not oftren the part number one will use for a replacement of said part. Stihl parts system will often use a different last 4 digits that what the actual part may have cast into it.

The before 1992 Media Cat and the one used after have some differences in part numbers and descriptions, seems a lot of these numbers are up in the air.
Makes it hard to know what part number to quote when placing a 'parts wanted ad' in the trading post.:(

Yes it does. Do you need parts for the 044 recoils, I have a bunch of spare stuff here that actually came off 044`s I have parted down. Not sure if I have any new stuff left after building 7 of these 044`s.

I'd like to find a recoil/fan housing, the plan is to purchase one in the US, send it to Mike ( @glock37 ) and have it powder coated.

Ah, good plan! There are plenty of them floating around, seems they all will fit. What saw you putting it on, an early 4 mm or later 5 mm?

Maybe this clears a little bit up of the confusion:

Crankcase/Fanhousing holes for the screws went from M4 to M5 (from serial X 25 454 554)

Fan housing:

The previous fan housing 1128 080 1810 is replaced by the new version 1128 080 1812. The hole for mounting the front hand guard went from 5,4mm to 6,4mm. The 3 other holes for mounting the fan housing went from 4,2mm to 5,2mm.

Up to the end of 1996, the new version of the fan housing comes together with 4 hollow rivets 5,5*0,5*6,8 (9416 868 6530). These rivets are needed to mount this newer fan housing on a older crankcase version with M4 holes.

The fan housing with rewind starter went from 1128 080 2100 to 1128 080 2102 and later it changed to the current no. 1128 080 2104.

Is this number printed on the shroud? If yes, I think it`s the wrong number. I`m not able to find it anywhere. Have a look at a 044 IPL for the number.

Do you mean the top shroud 1128 080 1624 from the IPL? That should be still availible.
