The Christmas Tree is already dead. I'll take your word though on sugar. Its a carbohydrate and that's more of what a tree uses than salt.
Thanks Squirrel for the input.
My girlfriend and I wanted to know for Christmas' sake.

Salt is a pretty good herbicide. Your tree isn't dead yet, or it would be brown. It's dying, of course, but it's not dead. Cut an inch off the base, and put sugar water in the base. The tree will take up the sugar water and use it like it would its own sap. The idea (and it works) is to postpone the complete death of the tree.

I was told years ago that the sucrose in 7-up is what you want to use to keep your tree around a little longer. I gather it is different than what is used in Sprite.

I will also apply an Anti-desiccant.
