I have been asked a couple of times if I notice the difference between the old and the newer JRed 2054. I don't use the older 54cc that much, I mostly use the newer 49cc version, just out of habit. Over Thanksgiving break I got the two out and cut up a pretty size-able ash, about 20"DBH, dropped it with the 70E (I love that saw) and bucked it up with the little Jonnys.
A few observations:
- 54cc has more "grunt" when the bar is buried in the wood
- 49cc seems to have more chain speed and does better on the limbs.
- The 49cc can lose power more easily than the bigger one when pushed.
- The 54cc doesn't have a decomp valve, never use it so didn't notice.
- They both feel the same in the hand, and are good saws
Some of this is common sense, but it is the first time I used both back to back for comparison. I will still grab the 49cc out of habit and the chain speed is nice. Both saws were running brand new .325 chain, 49cc had carlton, and the 54cc had windsor, both semi-chisel. Saws were recently tuned at my local JRed shop over the break.
