You can't escape yourself
I have been asked a couple of times if I notice the difference between the old and the newer JRed 2054. I don't use the older 54cc that much, I mostly use the newer 49cc version, just out of habit. Over Thanksgiving break I got the two out and cut up a pretty size-able ash, about 20"DBH, dropped it with the 70E (I love that saw) and bucked it up with the little Jonnys.

A few observations:
- 54cc has more "grunt" when the bar is buried in the wood
- 49cc seems to have more chain speed and does better on the limbs.
- The 49cc can lose power more easily than the bigger one when pushed.
- The 54cc doesn't have a decomp valve, never use it so didn't notice.
- They both feel the same in the hand, and are good saws

Some of this is common sense, but it is the first time I used both back to back for comparison. I will still grab the 49cc out of habit and the chain speed is nice. Both saws were running brand new .325 chain, 49cc had carlton, and the 54cc had windsor, both semi-chisel. Saws were recently tuned at my local JRed shop over the break.

They never were 54cc, just 53.2, as the Husky 55 etc.....:)

I knew that the latest ones had less power, but not that they had a smaller engine - thanks for that info! :)

Details, details Sawtroll. LOL

I was rounding up, 53cc sounds worse.

The newer 49cc makes 3.0hp and the old one makes 3.3hp (I think). They definitely have different power bands, and would buy a newer small one over the bigger one.

According to my Jonny info, the change to the smaller displacement took place in 1998. The RPM's also went up from 13,000 to 13,500. Mine also doesn't have a deco on it. I wonder if this is a consistant way to tell them apart?

The serial number of mine is 5390518. I'm not sure on my older Jonny numbers, but I believe that is 39th week of 1995, which makes mine the larger version.

The one saw from this family I'd like to get hold of is the 2051 which was the hot rod of the bunch. Turned up to 14,800 RPMs

I believe it was canceled in 1998 also, giving way to the 2055. My info lists both the early 2054 and the 2055 at 53CC, but Troll might have more accurate specs. (Might have??:dizzy: )

When I bought my 2054 (the small one) they didn't have the 2055, which I wanted. I bought it in 2000 I believe, I was still in high school then and was working.

The 2054 (53.2cc) and 2055 were the same displacement but with different porting I believe, and the 2055 would cut circles around the 2054. If I could find a good used 2055, I would snatch it up in a second. Troll is this right?

Both early 2054 and 2055 were 53.2 cc, but the 2055 produced more power, 3.7 or 3.8hp if memory serves, and was the replacement for the 2051 from 1994.

Published specs for the 2051 and early 2054 seem to have varied around the world, as they did on some other Jonsereds around 1990.......

I believe so!

The 2054 always was the "junior" for performance in that saw family.
