The Sleeper 024S Build

Here's a saw Jon and I are doing for my friend Mel. It's a real nice 024 Super, with an 026 top end.

The 026 jug is much taller than the 024 jug.



So our first move was to chuck the 026 jug up, and cut some off.


After the machine work......


Here's the cut jug next to an untouched 026 jug.

Then of course, we did some other mods.

On the 026 I learned a trick from Scott AKA Tree Monkey.

I cut the dome off the piston.


And cut the squish area in the jug flat.

And the ports get some massaging.....

After this I turn the project over to Jon.

He checked the saw over to be sure the seals, and rubber bits were good. Replaced the intake boot, impulse, fuel line, and filter......then went about his mods, and reassembly.

First he advances the timing by filing the flywheel locating key.

Now for the muffler work. Jon does a damn fine job on the mufflers.

The 024 muffler was full of baffles......



So he used an 026 muffler.......it was just easier.



Completing the sleeper look.......the added deflector is tucked in pretty well.

We do have one issue.

The choke starts pulling shut at 14,000 RPM or so.

We need a mesh air filter for this thing, and can't find one.....

I like the earliest 44mm jugs because the exhaust port is lower. This jug is a 44mm jug, but is too late to have the low port I'd prefer.

McMaster-Carr sells stainless mesh with a selection of fineness.
