Yeah... but...
We all read this to mean "not performing at all" which it didn't say. I can see a very different scenario: Mother asks why daughter is sitting funny. Daughter says she got a splinter in the bum. Mother asks how... eventually it comes out that son in law took daughter out to the woodpile. Imagine mom's reaction if "supposed to be important" daughter confessed she had fun.
