timberstand improvement

Anyone here do timberstand improvement, forest thining or girdling trees to reduce disease.
and cull crooked stems. I like to hear your pro's and con's

Hi Ed-

You opened kind of a big can of worms there. TSI work is highly specific and depends highly on many factors, such as: Landowner's goals, previous development/treatments, prevailing species, slope and aspect, soil type, median age of standing timber, and introduced factors ( bugs, disease, and fungus ).
 
We do a lot of that here on the lake bluffs, soley for vista work, and potential selective harvest of hardwoods such as oak, hickory and walnut. Thinking that a few logs may defray the owners tuition payments for kids in 15-20 years.
