To all those that have white oaks...

May not be associated with this gall thing, but wasps, or more specifically yellow jackets, hover around trees with scale or aphid.

There may be two reasons for flying insects around an Oak.

Speaking of White Oak, we removed some lower limbs on one yesterday to get some headroom in the backyard. There was a good size racoon in the tree. Our first encounter with one. A probe with the pole pruner's handle end showed that this critter was in retreating mode rather than aggression mode that day.
