Need help fellas, guy called to come pick up a tree that fell in his yard, no leaves left after the clean up and I have not had time to split this chunk he brought me.

I split some black locust last week that I cut last year. Still sprouting leaves!!!! Locust really stinks.

Not a bad smell, I guess kinda sweet. Homeowner said a maple but with the dark centers I wasent sure. I know it's not a poplar, black walnut, butternut but I can not tell without the leaves. Maybe I'll get it split tomorrow, I can't pick up the rest of the wood until at least Sat. due to my schedule.

Looks like sugar maple to me.
It does look kind of like maple and the dark center would support that especially for red or sugar maple. Bark throws me a bit though.
