Tuning by ear - how long did it take you?

I know some people that realized after seizing 4 or 5 saws that they better not tune an engine themselves...

It does not take much if one knows what they are doing (or should be avoiding).
Before tuning an engine make sure of the following: Are all parameters standard (like clean filters, good fuel (supply), properly working carb, no air leaks, etc., etc.)? Do you know the basic settings to start from? Does the unit have a rev limiter (carb or coil)? Are you setting max free revs (chainsaw w/o limiter, weed eater, etc.) or max revs under load (blower)?

Some saws develop more power in the useable band (while cutting) with H set a little on the rich side.
A blower adjusted to max rev like a regular chainsaw will usually not last very long.
