Also, the gas company came--there's no smell and the suggestion was in my mind a ruse anyway--only to find, surprisingly enough, nothing.

I would assume they used a probe and metered the soil?

The "smell" is an additive called mercaptan that is filtered out quite efficiently by soil. More then one house has blown up without any warning odors from both propane and natural gas leaks due to the effect of soil filtering out the odorization chemicals. Most of these leaks are small ones that persist over a long period of time.
 
Thanks for all the discussion. What I came away with is that any qualified person can do this as long as they have the requisite experience, references, insurance, etc. I'll resume interviewing candidates.
 
all that "cherry picker" nonsense is just that, nonsense sales pitch, how do you think they did it before cherry pickers?????
