Vintage Craftsman 2.3 Solid State

Rebuilding a Craftsman 2.3 Solid State chainsaw, putting a new piston and connecting rod in it, was wondering if someone could help me out, at the top of the connecting rod, one side has grooves, which side do these face, the clutch(exhaust) side or flywheel side, or does it matter? Thank-you
