I just bought a 1976 bicentennial Poulan chainsaw. The recoil setup is strange and really messed up. I’ve never worked on such a setup before. If anyone has any tips for me as to how to reassemble/fix this unit let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

Got the flywheel and recoil assembly off. I haven’t seen it put together properly and don’t know how to put it back together properly. If anyone does, let me know. I’ll try to find an IPL though.

I managed to get this far. Does the end of the spring that I circled in red seem broken? Am I right with reassembly thus far?

That poulan 76 is a poulan xx 20 if looking for any info or parts.

Friend down the road has 2 NOS ones with serial numbers back to back.

Not really a user saw imo. I had a couple xx. Prefer the micro ones for use.

I may have a service manual saved. See if I do still.

Thanks for the info. Those NOS ones are cool. I don’t plan on using this saw much.

I eon’t know why this starter pulley is broken the way it is. Is this a big deal? Like there’s more slots because pieces chipped off before I owned it.

I bought a new pulley and spring. However, I forgot that I’d need to replace the pull rope. The pull rope I have on hand is too small. Does anyone know what size this saw needs of pull rope diameter? I found length in the manual. Perhaps smaller would be easier for installation.

Never been in a bicentennial…but what is your rope size that’s too small?

Should be 1/8” or 5mm, just measure the pulley rope gap to see. The IPL shows it used 530042035.

I have 1/8” Stens rope on hand. It is noticeable smaller than what’s on the Poulan right now. Here’s a side by side comparison picture. Perhaps, the new rope is still big enough to work, and smaller enough that it would be easier to install…

Rope size shows same rope even used in the plastic poulans and micro ones. Remember the 76 is just a Xx 20 poulan.

Using this parts place gives another rope part number to use So maybe superseded from original # https://www.ereplacementparts.com/poulan-gas-chainsaw-parts-c-16962_17147_17168.html

530069232 https://www.ereplacementparts.com/rope-p-265654.html

Original IPL is what Hotshot shows. But now days parts IPL shows above.

I can measure what is in my bought new 2000 if needed. Takes same as what is listed FS today for 20. update - Measured 2000 same as what it takes.

I ran the original number hotshot showed you. It shows the new number to what I showed you above.

530069232 This part replaces obsolete part #: 530069339, 530010062, 530069231, 530022326, 530042035, 530069327, 530022290 and 530022289.

Betting rope might have been replaced with to big rope over time. Shows should be #4 3mm 1/8" which is what my 2000 came new with too.

Okay, thanks for the information. I’ll install my 1/8” rope.

Update. Just got the rope in the pulley kinda. Greased the bearing a bit. I’m not understanding the manual. How much inches of rope is needed? I have too much.
