What method was used in this video?

When this guy starts rigging down the stem, (at about 6mins in) how did he tie if off?
I've never seen a stem get rigged like this.. with no block or anything used? looks he ties a half hitch and just rigs it using one rope, using the rope itself to rig from??
Or am I missing something here...

Yeah, we used to call it a butt hitch, damn hard on the rope, but it worked... usually...

hmm, I inspected the video one more time, and he's cutting his own crotches into the trunk to rig from. that's how its holding. that's what was stumping me.
makes sense now but dam, you'd think if you were doing jobs of that size, you'd invest in some more practical equipment and some dam safety glasses at least....
