What to keep....MS261(new) or MS361(old)

Not many details. Randy(Mastermind) did a woods port on my 261 and it now has alot more 'grunt'. My 361 is stock and in good shape, not old and tired. I haven't done any timed cuts with video but the 261 sure as heck feels at least as stong if not stronger then the 361 and is obviously lighter.
That 261 is the proverbial "rabid beaver on crack" now. Check with any of the builders on here and they will give you details on porting your saw.

I recently aquired a practicly new 440 as well. LOVE that saw! Feels the same weight as the 361 but with ALOT more balls. :chainsawguy:

edit to add that you may want to port your 361, then you'd have the 50cc/70cc plan for only about $250. Just a thought.

I shoulda explained that one more. I meant to say that a PORTED 361 would be close to filling the roll of a 70cc saw, at least as far as I understand it. So for less then the cost of buying a 70cc saw, he could keep his 361 get it ported. I'm just thinking out loud here and could be way off base, wouldn't be the first time.

Port the MS361?

I wouldn't get rid of an MS361, one of the best saws Stihl ever made. Probably send it off to one of the AS builders to get the power closer to stock 70cc, which would give you a 50-70cc plan in effect. Sure the MS261 will see the most use, but it's still a 50cc saw and there's always the need for a bigger hammer from time to time.

Nice spot to be in. Port the 361 and do a good MM on the 261 and you'll have your bases covered for most of your needs...

Of course if you sold that 361 and ported a 70cc saw, THEN had your 261 ported, you would have a nice 50cc/70cc plan that cut like a 60cc/90cc saw plan. The 372 that Stumpy built me, doesn't quite have the torque of my old 660, but with a 28" bar it cuts about the same speed. With a 24" or 20" it will stomp a mud hole in it!!! I have yet to try a ported 261, but I remember an 029 that Stumpy built that would embarrass a stock 039/391 and was pretty darn close to 361 territory. Having seen video of the 261's that He's built and knowing the type of wood that he sports (That sounded awful:biggrinbounce2 I have no doubt that his modded 261's would take care of 75-100% of many average firewood cutter's needs. Now WANTS, that's another story. I still WANT a ported 880 or 084...

Yes, you should get your 261 ported! It will be stronger than your 361.

The MS361 is one of the best 60cc saws ever. However, I'm personally I'm a fan of a strong 50cc saw and a strong 70-90cc saw. I find no use for a 60cc saw when you have the other two.

There are mostly good suggestions posted to this thread, seems to me. I'd run the 261 stock and port the 361, but that's because I'm 63 yrs. old, don't have extra $$$ to spend, and stock 50cc and 70cc saws provide everything I need for what I do. Also, buying and selling used saws is more of a hassle for me than an opportunity. But, if I was younger or was in the wood business, I might be thinking about porting the 261, selling the 361 and buying a 70cc to port. The 361 would also make a good bucket saw.
