When you fill with ethanol free your getting some ethanol.

If your fuel pump doesn't have separate hoses for all the grades of fuel, you are getting some fuel of the grade the prior users selected.
Essentially you pump the fuel left in the hose from the prior user. If that was E85, you may be your one gallon can may end up with 30% ethanol

This isn't anything new, or even a scam. If the person pumping gas is too dumb to realize they need to put a few gallons in the truck before filling up the can it sucks to be them.

If no other option, put a few gallons in the car first, then the can.

Same here, the local Buc-ees here, have non ethanol on dedicated hoses
