The hinge was much larger than an inch, probably 3" where it tapers out. Also it wasn't windy, and it was a 75' pole with no limbs to catch the wind anyway.

What does that mean?

My bad... I read the pic wrong...
In which case, the only suggestion I would give is use the backcut to make the taper... the face cut is best left straight...

Well thank you murph. I did cut the top side of the face too deep, but I removed the dutchman that was formed, and cleaned the face up.

i agree tho that the tapered hinge should be made with the backcut, but I wanted to get the dutchman out of the way, because the trunk had to go just right to make it through the limbs of the other trees.

Here is a movie I made with my camera of the spar goin over.

Ignore the comment, "Is it goin the right way" tho, as my groundie was pulling with a MA and I couldn't tell from my angle.
