Cut some of this standing dead and thought it was some type of elm. These were cut from a live tree, bucked a month or two ago and just split today. There is a very small leaf that's emerged since bucked up, very non elm like. Splits nice, bright yellow when fresh cut and split then changes to a deep orangish-red after exposed for a while. The more pronounced bark is from the main trunk that was about 12" diameter, the smoother from a branch. any guesses?

Absolutely Mulberry... Just above Black Locust in BTU and just below Bitternut Hickory. We like to call it Hedge's little brother... Enjoy... You got good stuff there...:msp_wink:

Pick that sprig off and put it in a glass of water... I always wanted to see if those would grow roots...:msp_biggrin:

My favorite wood to burn.

I agree, Mulberry. They usually don't grow that straight around here, go up about 6 ft & "go everywhere". When I get one, once it's all split, there's a junk pile as big as the firewood pile. Nice burning wood.

Just remembered.... I've always wondered, if you milled Mulberry & built something w/ the lumber & sealed it right away, would it retain the bright yellow color? Anybody know?

It don't stay as bright. Like hedge, it turns dark gold. It's pretty in it's own way though...

Yeah..and when you cut it up, the sawdust pile ends up looking like a mound of golden cornmeal.
