Please help me ID this wood. It is extremely heavy. elm?

Are you positive that leave goes with the wood in the pics? Wood looks like oak.
 
Oak does not have pinnately compound leaves. Butternut normally has 11 - 17 leaflets. Bitternut hickory has 7 - 9 as shown in the photo.

Have you split any of the wood yet? If so, how difficult was it to split? Can we see a photo of the wood grain - maybe a closeup of the end grain?
 
+1 on Butternut.
Smells just like hickory when burnt.
Not the greatest firewood on the planet but pretty decent smoking wood that adds a nutty flavor to food.
 
Kingfisher, is that bottom piece of wood in the second pic from the same load of wood? Looks like white oak to me.
