Wood ID of the day

Please help me ID this wood. It is extremely heavy. elm?

Not elm - leaves are not correct. Maybe a hickory, maybe bitternut hickory.

Are you positive that leave goes with the wood in the pics? Wood looks like oak.

Oak does not have pinnately compound leaves. Butternut normally has 11 - 17 leaflets. Bitternut hickory has 7 - 9 as shown in the photo.

Have you split any of the wood yet? If so, how difficult was it to split? Can we see a photo of the wood grain - maybe a closeup of the end grain?

I guess it could be hickory if it was a small diameter tree.

Agreed. Walnut has a distinctive heartwood.

Smells just like hickory when burnt.
Not the greatest firewood on the planet but pretty decent smoking wood that adds a nutty flavor to food.

Kingfisher, is that bottom piece of wood in the second pic from the same load of wood? Looks like white oak to me.
