Any thoughts would be appreciated of course. I have been, well you see what I have been doing, what a freaking mess!

I imagine any harm I could do at this point would be negated by the harm that is happening on its own. I should have done this 4 years ago when we bought the place.
 
Basically what you are seeing in the result of bad mulching technique( on the smaller tree) and that is clay on top on the ash root crown/flare from when they dug the foundation.
The rot has set it.
 
At this point I am going round and removing soil. I am doing this periodically, this is a periodic job, in my yard, its very periodic.
