Jan 6th I started a post regarding my new 346XP just didn't seem to pull as well as my 20 year old 028 Super.

Post # 83 has videos of the saw before and after

Since then the 346XP was back and re-tuned by the dealer at no charge and it runs much stronger. During this post many suggested doing some mods on the new saw. So I did the opposite and modded the old saw.:hmm3grin2orange:

Kevin, aka "Chainsaw kid" offered to rebuild, muff mod and port the old girl free of charge because he enjoys projects like this. Since this time I have develped a friendship with Kevin and learned a bunch about about saws and mechanics as he sent pictures on the progress as time went by.

Well the saw now has: new fuel line, filter, impulse line, intake boot, piston, ported, squish lowered, muff mod, all new anti-vibe mounts, new rope, switched to 3/8ths 050 gauge chain and a brand new bar.

Upon firing it up, it now sounds like a small dirt bike.:yoyo:

Kevin said it would outrun the 346XP and by God he is right.

Behold: "The Sleeper"

I would like to thank this forum and Kevin for instilling faith in fellow man. A year ago I never would have dreamt about sending a saw and $$$$ acrosse the country to a stranger. There are some good people on this forum.:msp_thumbup:

BTW, throw some REP @ "Chainsaw Kid"

Tuning

After running the saw a little yesterday I called Kevin and it was a little fat. Being that I didn't want to screw anything up by getting to lean, he listened on the phone when I started making some cuts and loading the saw. After a couple tweaks it "makes the chips fly".

Yeah..the older 3 digit model Stihls were built strong and with torque.

I can only imagine what one set up like yours would feel like..!!

Congrats..!!

Well I'll tell you one thing, I won't run it without ear muffs.:chainsawguy::chainsawguy:

My 028AVSEQ has a port cleanup and muffler mod. I did much of the same maintenance to mine. New rubber all over. I love the way it runs and the way it handles. Fairly easy to tell why Stihl sold so many 028s.

I will add this..WFIW..to anybody...

Use 'earmuff' type hearing protection...NOT foam ear canal inserts..!!!!

Your ears were meant to release cleaning fluids just like your eyes and nose...

Don't Clog The Ear Canal Up....!!!...." Don't ask how I know"...as the expression goes..!!

Pretty fond of my 028S too! Original owner forgot tell me thst he tried to put a kit in the carb and it didn't go so well. After I sorted that out it's a fine saw.

+1 on the 028 Super. I sold the one I had and wish once again I hadnt. I cant say I would take it over the 346, but never had a chance to try them against each other.

Well I'm glad Ron enjoys his saw and I'm glad I could help him out. He is a down to earth person, just the kind that we'll all need if/when S hits the fan in our country/the world. Living in scarry times, don't take your eye off the ball for too long my friends, make reservations would be my advice. My hopes are that things smooth out. Keep on keeping on....

I know the 346 is a little power house with some mild mods and with the works it's a little beast. 028S's and 346's are just two great saws IMO.

Bowtie, If you tried them against each other stock, the 346 will beat the 028s in smaller wood. But, that is what it was designed to do...blabla bla, yeah we all know the torque factor the 028 vs revs of 346... So it comes down to feel or Ford Chevy. I'm Chevy BTW..
They are just both great saws. I'd rather have one then the other in certain situations but if I could only have one it would be the 028S done up with an 18" 3/8 set up.

This was a fun build for me.

Kevin
