HELP: Engineering Senior Design Project Ideas Needed. What are your dreams?

** I’m posting in this forum because I’m always seeing posts on “building the ultimate ___”, and I see an opportunity to combine the ideas of a lot of smart people who might not have all the resources to develop something. I can’t speak for my team yet, but I’m interested in the open source...

    Chain sharpening

Last Friday I too had the same problem of a saw cutting hard to the left. Anything over 5" thick I couldnt get through because the cut was so curved. I switched chains and problem immediately went away. Had the chain resharpened by an old timer who knows how to do it well and it cuts straight...

logsplitter wedge attatchment- mig or stick?

I've had more success with stick welders because I don't have access to a Mig that will throw enough current. If you can do it in multiple passes with a big enough mig, go for it. I'm a much better mig welder than stick - but i think my stick welds are stronger because its a much bigger welder.

Whats the most interesting thing you've found in a tree? (w/ pics)

I was cutting down 4 big maples a few months ago...and sliced into a hollow tree. When it hit the ground, a grayish black streak came flying out of it like a bat out of hell. Two trees later, the tree hit the ground and started crying. More like shrieking...but nevertheless it wasn't pretty...

Aftermarket Hop Ups for Log Splitters

I have the Huskee 35 ton from TSC that works pretty awesome as is. However, when doing a very unscientific sideways wood splitting experiment, I bent the foot pretty far. TSC was kind enough to replace the beam for free, and even let me keep the old one. 2 huge chains welded to the foot and a...

    Storing wood in a greenhouse

@ Getwood - - that's quite an interesting article about how little the effect of a solar kiln is. After researching and selling firewood for the past 5 or 6 years, experience has taught me that stacking rows a little apart so air can circulate and covering the tops of the piles to keep snow...

    Storing wood in a greenhouse

A long time ago, I had the idea of going out and getting a bunch of 3/4 or 1" conduit, cutting it to lenghts, and making a geodesic dome somewhat like this: http://www.byexample.com/projects/current/dome_construction/ I figured if it was 30' diameter, about 15' high, I could pile a ton of...

    Firewood Therapy

Theres something about splitting that's just therapeutic. Its a workout, but much better than going to the gym. All my buddies go there and pump iron, and at the end of the day, there is precious little to show for it. At least I have an big pile of split wood.

Free: 2' diameter 8' Walnut Sawlog - NW Indiana

Not sure if this is the right place to post: A buddy and I cut down a nice walnut - and cut it up for firewood, with the exception of the butt log. If anyone's interested, I don't have a way to move it, but it's yours for the taking. PM me for details. Not sure what the value of this is, but...

Help on choosing where to top two trees - with pics

I agree- top much off of them and you have two poles. Apparently they sway a lot in the wind and the homeowner doesnt want them to fall down. Is there any good way to top them and not kill the thing/make it look completely loony?

Help on choosing where to top two trees - with pics

A friend wants me to trim at least 2 of his trees - the ones marked with the red arrows. He says they are too tall and they don't want to lose them because of the wind. They also shade his backyard too much in the summertime during the evening. However, they are tree lovers, and don't want...

    What sharpening setup to get?

I just bought northern tool's grinder for about $100 including shipping- I'm going to try it out a night this week - I got sick of doing 7-8 chains every month or so by hand - so i sucked it up and bought a grinder. Someone mentioned something about filing down the guides some after a...

    Wood as a Fuel Source

I love cutting firewood, but always questioned how cost effective it was to the people heating their homes with it - even with a high efficiency burner- compared to gas or other forms of fuel. When people are paying 250-350 for a cord of oak, it just seems like gas would be so much cheaper...

Questions about learning the art of Felling

OK - thanks. On the old oaks - there are no powerlines anywhere close, and I will ONLY be removing dead wood and a few SMALL branches. I'll definitely read up on barbers chair - Any suggestions on some good videos? I do have legitimate climbing rope - now I need to find a good saddle. I'm...

Oak bedroom set, start to finish

I think I'm interested in making a complete oak bedroom set from scratch. I cut down a decent amount of oak, and if I could find enough red or white oak, what's all involved in going from log to lumber? Here's what I'm figuring after doing a little reading. -Cut oak tree in summer into 8 or 9'...

Questions about learning the art of Felling

A quick bit of my history in the business - skip to the next paragraph for my questions if you don't want to read it. I'm a 20 year old college student, studying engineering, but should be in business. I started out 4 or 5 years ago splitting wood on a borrowed logsplitter, and loved it. Now...

Nice place you've got there. I'm guessing that's not all for the bonfire pit?
