Wisconsin won't start. Anything left to try?

I meant to send an update to this thread, but never got around to it. I found an old mechanic who had actually worked on these engines. As soon as I recited the symptoms, he said "impulse spring". It seems this engine has a spring called the impulse spring in the magneto. If this spring breaks...

Wisconsin won't start. Anything left to try?

The starter stays engaged and cranks as long as I dare. The plugs come out a little sooty, but not wet. The carb is immaculate inside. I blew out all the passages with air. I doubt if there could be a blockage I missed. I forgot to mention that I tried mounting the carb off the original engine...

Wisconsin won't start. Anything left to try?

I recently replaced the Wisconsin V-4 engine in a lift with a used unit. It ran when the seller demonstrated it. It ran after I installed it, and I used it for maybe a half-hour total. Then it sat for a month, and hasn't started since. It fires, but won't catch long enough to run. It has fuel...

What a waste at an auction

I haven't been to an auction in some time, but I used to go to a lot of them. Things may have changed, but it used to be common for shills to openly bid on behalf of either the owner or the auctioneer. It was also common for an auctioneer to withdraw an item if he didn't like the bidding...

    Pole saws?

Do you have a source for parts for Stihl pole saws? I bent the pole on mine and the dealer's price for a replacement pole was only $100 less than a complete new (and supposedly improved) saw.

    For you pallet scroungers

There's already at least one knock-off. The Princess Auto flyer that arrived yesterday has one ("Grip" brand) for about half the price of the Crescent, so Harbor Freight probably has it too. I'll have to drop in and see if it looks big enough and solid enough to be useful.

    For you pallet scroungers

I've seen home-made versions of this tool and thought of building my own. The advantage of this one seems to be the indexable head. If I built my own, I wouldn't try to be that sophisticated, and I'd just have everything welded together. Also, the tapered tines make it easier to get under the...

    Top handle or not?

I wanted something lighter than my 038 to use at arm's length reaching out of a bucket. I settled on a 192t. A really light, handy saw. I thought it would be useful for limbing and bucking the small stuff on the ground, too. It wasn't till after I bought it that I got a look at the manual, and...

Stihl MS 291 burnt out after 1 hr

I found that Echo is available at Home Depot. I just noticed that Princess Auto (sort of equivalent to Harbor Freight) is advertising Poulan saws, model not specified but with a 16" bar, for $100. That puts them firmly in the disposable saw category. Maybe I should just buy a half-dozen of...

Stihl MS 291 burnt out after 1 hr

Thanks. Quite a few models to check out. Within the distance that I commonly travel for grocery shopping, there are 4 Stihl and one Husquvarna dealer. There doesn't seem to be any point in shopping Stihl dealers for price. Stihl seems to enforce their retail pricing. I don't know about...

Stihl MS 291 burnt out after 1 hr

So which are the plastic saws? Everything in the "saws for farming and landscaping" section? Are all the saws in the "saws for forestry" section metal? I ask because I'm in the market for a replacement for my old 038 and this thread has given me one more thing to worry about. Since I gave up...

    stihl 038 replacement

I never thought about the fuel line. I've changed the filter, the carb, the spark plug, but not the fuel line. It's about the cheapest thing I could replace, so I'd better try it before I replace the whole saw. It would be slightly embarrassing if that was the only thing that was wrong all along.

    stihl 038 replacement

Thanks. I'll look into the 362 and whatever the next model down is. As for this saw, I've tried everything. It has spark. It has compression.. I even put a new carb on it because someone with the same saw and the same problem told me that made his into a new saw. The funny thing is, once it...

    stihl 038 replacement

A couple of weeks ago I asked for advice about a 038 that's gotten too hard to start. I didn't get any response, and now I'm thinking more in terms of replacing the saw. I've been using it over 20 years, so maybe it's time to move on. What current saw would be closest to a replacement for the...

Stihl Magnum 038 difficult to pull starter cord

My 038 has been hard to start since new, but at least it was consistent (a few pulls with the choke on, it would cough, choke off, a couple more pulls and it would start and run). It finally got so it wouldn't start at all. One of my friends had the same saw with the same problem and he said he...

    Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

It seems to be a little-known secret that scrap lumber will burn. It seems everybody wants decorative wood. Scrap lumber is so hard to get rid of that demolition contractors will not only give it away, they'll deliver it. If you're closer than the dump, it's cheaper to haul it to you, and no...

    OWB Insurance Rates

Another couple of anecdotes: My previous insurance company didn't like wood stoves, but fireplaces didn't count. They sent some kid around to inspect my stove. He arrived with a sheaf of forms and specifications for clearance, etc. While he was trying to figure out what they meant, I noticed...

    OWB Insurance Rates

North Waterloo, but that may not help you. It's also a mutual, and farm mutuals don't generally insure outside their own county. Are you sure the increase was all due to your owb? If you were appraised at about the same time, that could be your main problem. I have a big very old brick house...

    OWB Insurance Rates

Let's face it. Any change, or anything unusual is an excuse to increase premiums. A few years ago, Ontario was making noises about requiring sprinkler systems in all dwellings. At the time I listened to a panel discussion on the topic. The consensus was that it was a great idea, but not...

Alternate methods of winterizing the OWB

Used automotive anti-freeze is toxic waste, so if nobody will buy it and the owner can't get away with just dumping it on the ground, it's expensive to get rid of. I looked at a tractor for sale at an auto repair shop a few years ago, and the owner was getting rid of his used anti-freeze by...
