Another example of corporate greed causing an American corporation to turn their backs on the very people that created their success.

The greed is 99% of the American consumers that place no added value on "made in USA" brand or quality.

totally agreed!!!

I'll go out of my way to buy American tools... especially if they are compititive on pricing to quality ratio. Big Snap-on fan!

for instance... just purchased a new Peavy/Cant hook... to me the only choices were Peavy Mfg (original inventors) and Logrite. both are made in USA... ended up with Logrite due to high tech factor, but will also buy a Peavy Mfg Bangor Peavy at some point.

unfortunately with technology transfer... china can make products pretty much equal in quality to ours. Note I'm not referring to clone/knockoffs. but when owners of products decides to transplant factory/technology overseas... the end products will be very close to original quality, if not identical.

pretty much the only folks that have the financial resources to buy out American companies for brands... then move entire production overseas.... are the Multinational Companies.

there should be laws penalizing predatory behavior like this. instead our laws rewards actions like this. especially for companies that support an entire small community like visegrip did.

putting tariffs on incoming products from transplanted companies would do away with this practice in a hurry!

I know the country is different but the sentiment is the same. I will go out of my way to buy Australian even if it costs me more. Patriotic I think the call it.

Belgium... looks like you need some real wrenches...

Dayummm I thought you was going to show a chewed up bar stud or something of that nature. Greed wins again, American worker loses again. Seems to be a common thing nowdays. The only way its ever going to stop is when Americans stop buying goods made in China. I've always tried my dayummmest to buy USA on most anything if I can. I've personally never seen a hand tool made in China be very good.

I've got about 25-30 pair of all different types of Vice Grips, always liked them as the ole when all else fails. Looks like about 25-30 pair is all I will ever own now, f-k em.

I wondered about this....

I have 2 pairs of the 7WR size pliers. Both have the 'Vice Grip' trademark but only one has "Made in USA" on it. This set has a better finish and has clear, sharp markings. The other (newer) set has a poor finish and crude markings. Are they a counterfeit or has Irwin been outsourcing for a long time?

In any case......DAMMIT!!

I cant understand the tradeoff of labor for shipping. They must pay them chinks nothing to offset fuel prices to ship goods overseas. The only thing I like from China is the food. I love going to chinkie restaurant for dinner, and the owners are from Hong Kong so thats good right?:)

Rubbermaid strikes again...they closed a plant in a small town in Ohio, Wooster, about 7 years ago. Really hurt that town for a while. So as others have said, fu^$ em. I am a big fan of channel locks and Mac. It keeps getting harder to buy US made stuff in small businesses like the local hardware. Big companies just keep taking over with their chinese garbage, like Walmart.

I remember that, I remember hearing the story on how they took the machines right out and shipped to China, The guy that telling me about it blammed Wal-mart, that Wal-mart was their biggest customer and wal-mart told them that they would pay X amount for their products and no more. So it was a decision to close shop and go to China. Anyhow it sure sucks that everything we have is going east, I hope you all like Chinese food, because if we keep selling out for the improved profit their won't be a country left.

Pretty much everything Newell gets involved with, moves to China.
My boss used to work for them and he lost his job when they moved out. He also laid most of the blame on Wal-Mart, said that after they got so committed to supplying Wal-mart that Wally world then began to tell them what price they would pay. And if they didn't like it then they could hit the door.
Problem was that Rubbermaid had invested so much in equipment and facilities just to supply Wal-Mart, they couldn't afford to walk away. So then Newell came to the rescue and bought them out. Help like that, I can do without.

I have a Stanly, don't know if I spelled that write? locking pliers Vise-grip like but I find it better Than VGs, Made in USA I only use ''Visegrips'' for holding things when welding or doing crappy jobs on a destroyed fastener. My dad taught me as a little kid to always use the right tool for the job if he would see me using a plier on something I would get heck this is as a 10 year old working on his bike. I must have been the only kid with a set of metric made in Germany wrenches for his bike including Allen head wrenches and a set of bearing race tools.
P.S I still have them to this day.

i wouldn't worry too much about it.

afterall....every politician running for any office in america has tv ads claiming they're going to keep jobs in america if elected.

yea...right.

Will not buy any more, Maybe craftsman or another brand. I hope they lose their backside. Guess they will be sold at harbour freight now in the china section of tools.

I thought at HF every thing between the front and back walls of the store was the China section!

I will never buy a Chinese made Vise-Grip. I too hope that they loose their ass. The quote in the article is interesting. They are worried about the 'Brand' being competitive. They are going to whore out the name. Management greedily protects their own interests, when they could thin their ranks and leave the plant in the US. I buy tools made in the US, Canada or Europe, if the option exists. I will pay double or triple to avoid Chinese made garbage. My company, I am the owner, spends well over $100K on tools and equipment every year. I own at least 50 pairs of Vise Grips. Just yesterday, a subcontractor asked me if I had any vise grips, I replied by asking what size and jaw profile?.

BTW: Crescent is owned by Cooper Tools. They had been importing heavily for quite a while, not across their entire line.

We need a poll. Would you buy a US made 12" Crescent Wrench in Very Good used condition for $18 or a brand new Crescent 'branded' 12" crescent made in China for $14.

Oddly, after 2 years the Chinese made wrench will be $20, once all US competition has been eliminated...
