I would put the 046/460 and 7900 in the 80cc class - but that's just me ....

That would work out ok since when it comes to general out of the box bad assedness, the 7900 ain't scared of any saw Niko!!! Just sayin...
:hell_boy:

Oh if they only had an unlimited coil...:hmm3grin2orange:

Actually... I need to step back a few years. Before the 044 came out... the 038 MagII is what all the fallers were packin' around here. That thing was a torque monster for it's size. Then when cats were usin' the factory triple port muffler covers... or havin' them woods ported... they were friggin' sick.

The 038 MagII was around 75cc's or 77cc's I don't remember. But I remember those things were still eatin' a lot of wood... even when the 70cc and "lighter" 044's came out. My feelin' is that a lot of cats were screamin' at Stihl after the 038 MagII bit the dust... and out came the 046.

I bet it was scary after a woods port. 77cc is awesome. I didnt know they were that big. Thats pretty cool to learn. Another good runner from what i understand was the Husqvarna 77. I believe it had a factory triple port muffler. Husqvarna said it was very popular back in the day. And a few people around where i live used them and loved them. Very powerful saws those Husqvarna 77's.

The 038 MagII was 72.2cc, the 044 70.7cc - and a lot lighter....:D

Dont remember if I ever ran a 038mag2, Iran a super or two. Dindnt know the displacement either. Bet the 77 was a good one. Never did understand why the two classes 70cc, and 75-77cc. The 046 has a noticeable torque difference over my 044, but not enough to make me want to sell it to go buy a 046-460. If I were looking new between the two no brainer 460. Dont get the so close classe's, because they both cost the same here. To be honest I would probably get the 390xp over the 460, because big difference there in power, but close in price. I bet if you held each in a hand the weight is close to. It used to make sense I guess if it was a price, and weight thing, but if the weight is close, and the prices then go with the bigger cc.

I really liked the 390xp... I "ALMOST" got one... The Numbers didn't impress me all that much, but when I picked one up it just felt like it was supposed to be there... If that makes any sense...

My neighbor and I cut some firewood for him and my father the last couple of days. I was running my 257 converted to a 262xp less the 3 shoe clutch, and he has last years ms 361. We ran em both hard and he even had to be impressed with the 257/262. I guess he was a little outmatched since my 257/262 was recently ported by me and my interpretation of a woods port. Not saying all of these saws are bad because I have run them all in the stihl and husqvarna line up and they are all good saws. I just am very happy with what I have and building it from scratch and porting it myself gives a person a sence of pride. So that is why I love mine. This arborist site is awesome, thanks for having me.:chainsawguy:

The early 046 saws were rated at 5.6 hp - but were lighter as well than the late ones and the 460.

Well I'm not to sure about the validity of that HP number. Brad's father has a very early 046, and when I say early, like the first few months they were put on dealers shelves. I can tell you for fact it's stronger than any current production 460 by a bit, numbers the manufactures print out can only tell you so much.

Manofstihl, I have had my eyes on the 681 for years. Never had the pleasure to use one almost bought one from Bailey's, as usuall no money. I alway's thought that would be the key, and a tough saw to beat for an all around runner, a 80-88cc that could be built as light and nimble as an 044, or 372. That would be a winner! Andyshine I'm agreing with you those early 046's were strong. My logger buddy's you know the one's who only run 660's. Well let's just say the 046mag found a place in the landing, and wood's with em. And earned there respect. They alway's told me the earlier the better.

I've been bitten by the 100cc 064 bug..100cc in a 15 lb saw , now thats got to be somewhere around the top of the pole...gotta build me one...sooner would be to late...

Don't judge something by the numbers alone. I have built a bunch of small block Chevys and let me build you up a 350 then a 377. After you test run both you would say the 377 was 1/3 bigger. It obviously is not but it is the right combination and just feels and acts good. The 390 is alot like that. I always liked my 285 and 385's but the 390 is just that much better. So yes I know exactly what you are talking about. CJ

Man, 390-7900, now that would be a toughie for anyone to decide on. Either way a man defenitly wins IMHO
