Never mind the dang saws. I'm going to get me some peanut butter.

I got saws.

I don't change the way I deal with people or stores based on how deep their pockets are.

If it's a crappy thing to do, then it's a crappy thing to do...period.

It is a crappy thing to do but on the flip side its fun to deal with such customers. It doesn't happen very often where I work but the few times it has sure was fun, yup its fun when out comes that awful two letter word all customers hate, NO! You get the "what do you mean no", back comes "it means just what I said, NO", too funny.

Those big corporations can afford those returns since they have low balled the vendors beyond belief to get their product line in their big store chain. Look up Snapper and Walmart and you'll see how those big stores can take those returns and think nothing of it. Mom and pop shops can't afford such non-sense and don't put up with it..

Tommy! How ya been!

I just had a great idea for a reality TV series. We put you in customer service for a big chain every week.

I'll go charge my video camera...

Haha. Hey just think if every customer I tell hell no to watches the show we should get good ratings,:msp_biggrin::msp_biggrin:

I know one of the managers at the local Lowes. He says that after Irene they had a LARGE number of generators come back when the power was restored. He says they keep them for 90 days or so then blow them out the door at rock bottom prices. Hmm, almost time to look at used generators?
They know nothing's wrong with the units. But they have to follow store policy and refund the dirt bags (my words, not his) that return them.

Hey Ed heres a goodie that happened just last week. Fellow brought a saw in with a warranty issue which was cool, a minor thing. I tell him Stihl will take care of that and he's like cool. Then he says it hasn't been cutting right either, the chain has been smoking. I take a look at the chain and wowowow, talk about ruined. It had 13 teeth broken off and the remaining teeth looked like they been grinding concrete. I said man what in the world you been sawing. He says only wood. I go wood won't rip the teeth off your chain like that, you must have ran into something very hard. He goes no no no no, I haven't hit anything. I go well tell me hows the saw cutting, he goes not very good, the chain is smoking. I go no, its not the chain smoking its the wood. He goes how so. I go ya ever see them old indians rubbing two sticks together and starting a fire, he goes yeah, I said there's ya sign,:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Add in the Elvis fans, and it will be a blockbuster!

When I worked for Sears Service in the '90s, a good portion of the equipment I repaired was what they called "store stock". :

Small world. I have 13+ years Hardware experiance, including 3+ from Sears. Glad I have real Jobs now :)

Lets see, Sears stories. What do you mean that snowblower ( tractor, chainsaw etc.) dosnt have a lifetime waranty, It says Craftsman on it ?! Hears that plenty.

Local contractors who evey spring would bring in a cartload of broken rakes, shovels and such for full Guarantee replacement, even though the waranty excluded comercial use.

Oh, and the Tag Sale scroungers that showed up every monday to exchange all their finds over the weekend.

In your neck of the woods, that still leaves too many teeth...

I'm telling you, you have a hit show in the making!

Funny you bring that up. I recently set up a 32 in flat screen on the shop wall. I do a awful lot of repairs on the spot. The customers will take a seat and watch TV while waiting, they really like that. I had a Elvis in concert DVD playing last. The next thing I know I got folks sittng and standing all around in the shop watching the show. Gotta be a way I can make a buck off my TV, hmmmm, hehehe

It happens in Australia too. My neighbour worked at KMart, he used to tell me about people that bought chainsaws and tents and sleeping bags. They would use them for their holidays and then return them and get their money back.

It gets worse. We're talking mostly about men bringing back power equipment. Wanna know whats 100 times worse, women bringing back clothes. Seems they will go to a get together or party wearing a fancy outfit only to return it after the gathering. I rarely ever go into Wal-mart anymore but I used to years ago. I always noticed tons of clothes laying all over the return counter. Dayumm them women, I would tellem NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously? You mean Lowes actually closed one of their stores? Wow.......

It's more than one. A Lowes in Manchester, NH closed last night and another is going to close in 2 weeks. My wife just told me about it tonight.

Menards Had the same problems with ope returns. They now have a new policy If Gas is put in the unit it cannot be returned. If it is defective. They will give you the location of the closest repair shop. It makes a few people angry but I can see why they do it. It is not fair to the store for someone to buy a saw. Cut up some trees with it and then return it. Every consumer who shops their pays for that abuse. Home depot and Lowes will likely follow the no return trend on OPE.

What 99.99% of people don't see is the slip in the box that says "DO NOT RETURN TO THE STORE WHERE PURCHASED. CALL ###-###-#### FOR YOUR NEAREST SERVICE CENTER."

I bet it was pretty hard to start with the rod hanging out... ;)

Yep. I couldn't get it lit no matter how hard I pulled!:jester:

Ended up putting a new short block in it.

Heard that one many times too. Then there were the jackasses who would hit a pipe with their shiney new mower, then try to argue that the mower was defective since "that POS broke the day I got it". Same for the moron that unboxed his new mower and didn't pour in the included pre-measured bottle of oil before running it. He cried to the manager, and Sears ate the thing....

I work for Wal-Mart and this is a major issue at the store I work in, though our new store manager is working hard to correct the problem. Wal-Mart actually has several different return polices depending on what you have bought, but if a customer stomps their feet and cries enough they will end up getting their way. Our former store manager allowed anything to be returned with or without a receipt, even if the product UPC was not in the Wal-Mart database(This means the item could not have been purchased from any Wal-Mart in the USA with in the last 90 days). Because of this our last "big" inventory audit was very very short, I am talking about millions of dollars here. Because of this bad audit the employees in my store lost their quarterly bonus, I personally lost a $400 bonus because of people who use Wal-Mart as a free rental center. I don't know about you but I can not afford to give up $400 every three months just because someone wanted to "screw" the big bad company over. Oh....... Just for everyone's information. When you return any food item we are required by health code to dispose of the returned item, no matter why it was returned. If you buy a loaf of bread and find mold by all means please return the item. If you buy smoked ham lunch meat instead of baked ham then you should just deal with it. If you return it we have to throw it away, no one gives us any type of credit for the loss and it directly affects my quarterly bonus. The only exception to that would be items that are DSD(direct store deliveries) like bread, milk, name brand chips and some snacks like Little Debbie and Krispy-Kreme donuts.

Ok, let me ask this grey area question in my opinion.

I bought a small 25cc cheap weedwacker at sears, used it for 10 minutes and realized quickly that I would not be happy with it for the long run. Immediately boxed it up, drove to sears and traded it for a larger model.

So it is really my fault for not doing the research and buying the cheap piece of junk. Should I have lived with my mistake?

What did you tell them when you returned it? If you told what you just told us, then you did nothing wrong.

IMHO, depending on their store policy, absolutely not. But there's a heck of a difference in using one for 10 minutes as opposed to 29 days - hours upon hours in those 29 days.
If it is their store policy that you may return it if not happy with it. Then so be it. I mean heck, you can research something till your blue in the face, but you never really know whether you will like it or not till you run it. IMHO. Within reason of course.
