I found one of those on Ebay, in a Craftsman version. Is that something bad to buy as an older saw? Maybe, ok, it will be for trimming use, but I would like to clean her, and maybe paint her up, and keep her going.

Here's the link....

How can you run it so lean when it calls for 16:1?

That was with the oil they had back then. Newer oils allow leaner mixtures and still give the same protection to the engine. You can still run it too lean by turning the carb mixture screws in too much. That is the fuel/air mixture, and I prefer to run that mixture just a tad rich because that beats changing pistons and jugs. I think that engine likes both screws at about 1 and 1/4 turns each or thereabouts, anyway you can start there.

Yeah, that is kinda pricey. I get them for about $10 at the flea market and put new fuel lines and carb kit in them and still lucky to get much over $30 for them.

Thanks, I'll watch it and maybe contact the seller. If nobody snaps it up, maybe I'll get it for $40. Even if it is $50 shipped, if the saw runs decent and works, it beats spending $$$ for a new one.

Old Man and his Poulans

Was cutting another Ash today. Decided to use the 5200 to fell the tree. Not because I had to, but, because I wanted to. :D I used a couple 4000's to buck it up. Remembered to bring the camera along again. Here are a couple pics, and several videos. That is if I can get then to show up.

Gregg,

Linton, huh? Like where they have that music festival every year? I have a brother in law that lives in Bloomfield, and I've actually been down to the festival last year. Let me know if you have any of those 25s you would like to part with. I'm still new to fixing these little things, but it would definitely beat buying a new saw. I could have him stop by.

Yeah, that's where it is...I don't go to the festivals much even though my nephew plays in them, the music's too loud for us anymore, guess we're a generation or two behind. I've sold all but one of my micro saws and plan to keep it. I still have two Craftsman saws and a Poulan 25 in the shop, I'll have to get them out and see if they still run, haven't messed with them for awhile.

Poulan 4200

So I bought a Poulan 4200 with a full wrap off ebay, haven't received it yet but just gettin some info!!! This is my first "large" Poulan, I have two 3800 now and have had lots of 3400-3800 countervibes. It looks rough and will need stuff if not too much stuff!!!!
Question is???? are they worth putting money into, I don't need to use it, but also don't just want a shelf queen. Whats the hard parts to get? And who has them? I will have the saw by Monday.
I have had "GREAT" luck with the person I bought this from, they sell parts saws for less than $50.00 but last two only needed old fuel drained out, most likely wont be that lucky again.

Thanks in advance
Duane

Why do you insist on baiting us like that???LOL

You are on a Poulan thread, talking about one of thier best saws, and you ask if they are worth putting money into!!!

The answer is....A 4200 running right, will work a stock 372 or 440 'til its tongue is hanging out!

PM sent.
Nice work Gregg! Always like using those saws and seeing others do the same.

Leaner mix won't hurt, run my 245A and all the others at 40:1 or 36:1 with no problems at all, have run 50:1 when helping friends cut (mix 2.5 gallons and share). Tried 16:1 a while ago and they wouldn't right (the 245 or 306, didn't try it in the newer ones). I'm with Zogger and A. Palmer. Rebuild the carb (it's pretty easy) and keep it. If you need any help with anything, the guys on here are a great resource. As for the recoil, does the spring jump or does it just start binding?

Ed

it seems to just get tired with 6-8". When the flywheel is off it retracts fine but when its all assembled it gets hung up.
