All this technique analisis isnt needed. This is a phenomonam unique to west side PNW falling. We were 3 days short of setting a record for consecative days without rainfall. Whats actually going on with Pattys trees is once the gunning cut is started the moistue in the tree instantly escapes causing such sudden drying the stump will actually twist in the ground from the warping and twisting. So a gunning cut will look good initially. I would recomend you wait till we get some good rain in before sighting your saw in its prolly fine where there set. You may want to try the Stihl 440 mag DW saws. (DW = PNW dry weather saw only available at a few exclusive PNW saw shops). Hope this helps.

Cool now I know what those black line thingys are.

I have a question a little off topic. Whats the best leash system for training Falling Dawgs. Should I get a muzzle for the sharp ones.

I apologize if I came off that way that is not my intentions at all I grew up logging and I have never seen those taped on sights before. If they are common then again I apologize I did not mean to insult anyone. I am only trying to give some advice as I have personally fallen several million feet at production level.
I agree never seen taped on sights, only thing I figure is, compensating. Parmeter has told me the sights are slightly off, on some Stihls, even his 066. Aaron, John, and I had that conversation. John is A stihl man through, and through, his family of loggers too. So for him to tell me he liked Husky sights better, it gained my ear and attention. I do not know for sure and certain, but may be something there. Slow p, I agree with mentioned above, your tree looked right on mark, or gun, according to your corners, which also looked nice and square. Parmeter drilled that in my head, gun, saw square, and keep staraight cuts, and square corners. Always, so for years I practiced on smaller trees, whic I found harder, awkward angles, and less to bite into. I am curious on the marks though on that Stihl, be cool to hear the story behind it.

How much extra does it cost to put that sight on the bar? How fast does it rub off? Is it hard to get it to read the same as the one on the sawhead?

I can't comment on the cost of that beauteefull display of pensmanship, I'm just a lowly plumber type.

I sure don't recommend trying to read the sight lines near the bar tip when the saw is running and buried in a spar. It might be a little fuzzy from all the vibrations and you could get a bit of bar oil slung in yer eye.

There's half a dozen on here that, from personal experience, I know to be actual experts. There are also some people on here who don't quite get it...yet.

I don't doubt that. I am not an expert tree man, just fix stuff that they tear up or wear out. Most everything I cut on the farm is old, big, and dying with barbed wire in it and half a dozen dead limbs that will easily squash you like a bug. If I can get them within 10 degrees it's cool with me.

But, I could claim I had cut more than Holmen Tree.

So, I don't know whether or not this sight line is commonly used or if so where.

If one man says he has been a faller all his life and never used it I don't see much reason to believe he is not good at his job, or the man who does use it for that matter.

But, separating the wheat from the chafe on forums is not always the easiest thing.

Hell, I have several thousand posts and I'm pretty much a moron.

I am not a faller. I try to get trees on the ground so I can get firewood. Now, I found some great tape at the feed store this morning. Will flames be too much of a distraction for sight lines?

I think the extra weight of the stickers on the Barbie Saw is throwing off the whole sideways balance of your saw.......That has got to be the problem. You may need to put a sticker on the tip of your bar.

-Take care - Sam

Naahhhh, wouldn't work...he's cut more than RandyMac, 2dogs, Redprospector, Floyd, Cedarkerf, Spotted Owl, Slowp, FSBurt, and every faller in British Columbia combined.

You know that.

I have it on good authority that he is also willing to travel great distances to engage in pugilistic confrontations:jester:
