It's a hard one for me because i've gottwn alot of freebies that were just awesome but with value, quality, and usefullness in mind i would say my current 395 was the best deal. It is a 2008 and i bought it in 2010. The previous owner straight gassed it just after the warranty ran out. He went and bought a brand new oem top end and didn't know how or even have the time to install it. I was at his house one day and i saw it sitting in his shop and asked what you want for it. He just said take it away for $40. I said sure and that was before i knew he had a brand new oem p/c for it. Once he pulled that cylinder out my eyes lit up. I literally used his tools to put the new top end on while him and my dad drank beer. Had it running in just over half hour. All fresh. That 395 has been a good saw just a few weeks ago or so i had to replace the oiler because it was leaking bar oil out the worm gear area. Luckily for me i had a parts saw sitting in the shed so took the oiler from it so it owes me nothing.

Well I'm like you, I've had a couple of freebees, and some very low dollar saws, but I guess the best deal was a 029 super and a 041 Farm Boss both for 200 bucks. They have both been stellar cutters and at least one of them goes to the woods with me every time. JR

My buddies dad had a David Bradley 360 he was sick of looking at and told me if you can't get it running you can have it, if you do get it running bring it back and let me make a cut or two with it and then you can have it. Some fresh mix in the empty tank, some bar oil and half a dozen pulls and she was runnin. That was the best deal for basically a conversation piece.
A couple years back at the WI,MN GTG I payed I think $10 for a raffle ticket and won a brand new Dolmar 5100H. That had to be the best deal for a usable saw.

Got a 262xp and a 444 for 75 bucks(Cdn) one time, had really wanted a 262 to add to my collection. The 444 was just sweet, started looking through my parts and found a lot of NOS parts I had and never knew about, even a good condition piston incase I burn this one out.

When i was 16 Friend of the family worked at the dump, He would always bring me saws and such that people where throwing away, 1 day he brought me an almost new jonsered 2050 turbo, the owner bought it new gassed it up and smoked the clutch and chain brake cause he didn't know how to disengage the thing. I worked out a deal with my employer (he was a husky dealer) did a tune up on a mower and he got the new clutch and chain brake for me. It ran great, till my dad loaned it out while i was at work. :msp_angry: It came back toasted. They tried to run it again with chain brake and this time melted the case. Same time he brought me a truck load of husky saws to fix for him. 2 saws he never got back. Husky 257 and a 36. I sold the 257 for $250 and kept the 36 till it got stolen :msp_angry:. My saws stay under lock and key and only 2 that are allowed to even look at them hard is me and my FIL. Everyone around me now knows if you touch them said saw will be used to remove said hand.

Until I read this thread I thought I had gotten a pretty good deal on a Stihl 084 with a couple bars and chains for $600. Oh well, it has served me well cutting some big cottonwood and pine.

It is kinda old -- and has some piston scoring (found this out after a tune up, plus I posted some pics here).

Any guesses on cost of a top end job and maybe a porting job you sawheads are always talking about? Or is this saw a boat anchor when it gets bad. Seems OK now, but I have never run a new one this size.

I just picked up an 084 for $300 with monster compression the other day. Sold it that day to a buddy for $300 because i'm not much of a stihl guy. Almost kept it because the side chain adjuster is nice for milling. Seems lighter then my 3120 too. Didn't post a thread about it because of i know i would get burned for no pics. Internet is to slow to upload but am getting my new setup in a month so yeehaww. As far as you guys know the 084 didn't happen. $600 is still not to bad for an 084. The $300 i got that one for was just a stupid person who was easy to barter with. He originally wanted $700. When you look at the prices of the new ms 880 you can get 2 running 084's with 5-6' bars for that.

Guess the electric craftsman saw was the best deal i got, because it was free. (no ####, who would pay for that?). Paid a fair price for all the rest. :dizzy:

When I started getting into chainsaws pretty heavy, a buddy of mine would get hogged up on a saw and buy one after running one of mine.
The first was a 5100 Dolmar, then a Dolmar 420 a few months later, and finally a Dolmar 3410 top handle in the space of about a year. He didn't run 3 tanks of fuel through any of them.
You kinda have to know this guy to appreciate this story. This guy will go through phases of deep interest in something and after a while the new wears off and he just dumps stuff to fund the next "interest". I've seen him go through guns, knives coins, radio controlled cars, rabbits, chickens 4-wheelers, chainsaws and a host of others.
Well to make a long story short, this guy decides to get himself a Shopsmith and asks what I would give for all 3 of his saws.
I gave him every penny I had to spare at the time which was $550.00.
I modded the 3410 and sold it to a tree guy I know for $300.00.
The guy I bought them from came around about six months later and bought back his (previously) own 5100 for $250.00 and that left me with a Dolmar 420 with less than 3 tanks through it for free!:dizzy:

Huh i saw that thread but the title made me want nothing to do with it so i didn't even open it. If i would have known i would have. I guess even threads with unappealing names can be good. Uh oh i'm judging a thres by it's title. Thats no good. I gotta cut this out.

I understand your thinking ;). Here on AS "You SUCK!" is a comment used good-naturedly when a member posts about getting a really great deal. It has taken a few folks by surprise .

My best deal was actually two the best freebie and the best price. The best price vs. Value I've gotten is the Mac 210 I bought on a whim at an auction $10 didn't know if it ran just knew I wanted the case to sell, well I got it home and it fired right up after two pulls, speedy little saw. And my best freebie was a husqvarna 55 that I "rescued" from the green box, it ran fine but the piston was scored and it blew the cylinder, but I'm gonna tear it apart this weekend hopefully if I get some time and replace it from another saw.
