We cut a lot of Ash in Vermont, for firewood. Drys quickly and can almost be burned green.

Unfortunately, there is little in the way of hardwood out here in BC. At least on Crown Land. Being in fruitwood country though, there is some excellent wood to be had. With the land continually being converted to wine production, a lot of trees come down. Aggressively pruned apple is terrifyingly hot when seasoned. Probably as close to Eastern hardwood BTU as can be had unless someone is dropping an Oak in their yard.
The nice thing about Douglas and Western Larch is the smooth and fast cutting these old, torque-heavy saws can produce. 3400's are pretty versatile, even in the 24" +. I happened to recently show a conifer a 4000 though. Smiled so hard my lips were cracking open. Tree literally trembled when it heard me fire it up.

I had a chance to cut some spruce this year. I couldn't believe how fast a saw went through that stuff. It's kind of hard to compare the hardwood to the softwood if you don't get much of a chance to cut both frequently. The hardwood is clean and doesn't put crap on the saw. It also burns much slower than the soft wood. The softwood is a great fireplace or campfire wood as it burns fast and hot but not too long.
I would have soft maple, aspen / poplar for the fireplace but I can't store enough wood to get through the winter.

We don't have any Pines or Spruce in these parts. Just Silver Maple & Basswood, as our soft woods. I would gladly trade about 100 silver maples for 100 Ash trees...
which are just about extinct in our area. Sadly
We get any more "borers", "diseases" "pests" from god knows where, we will just be left with weeds, in 20 years.

Hello folks.... i had some time so i was going through saw parts ones i bought could not get running....well this one soon as i popped it apart i saw the gasket was torn.... but the piston and cylinder are not bad....to me far as i can tell.... The cylinder had a horizontal line from the ring and small bit of aluminum transfer... still smooth....i took pics all the way around the piston and the top ....whats the best way to clean this ... and the top of the piston... and should i clean the cylinder and delete the base gasket and try to make it run...? this is a craftsman 2.3 /poulan micro.... thanks for any replys....im shocked it was not all scored up... but ya all think its good??? oh and should i replace that ring? if i can find one..... again thank you.

Neither one looks bad enough to me to chuck away. If you are going to sub the thin ring for the thick ring piston, make sure the one on the yellow saw is not for a 2350 which would have a bare aluminum piston and a chrome bore cylinder. The one on the red saw is likely a 2300 which has a chromed piston and a bare aluminum cylinder bore. You can tell for sure by the piston diameters.
A 2300 piston is 1.525" in diameter
A 2350 piston is 1.520" in diameter.
You could always check your compression to see if a new ring is needed. Don't use acid to clean up a bare bore cylinder as it will dissolve the cylinder wall. Elbow grease and careful cleaning is required.
I find Hoppe's #9 powder solvent or Sea Foam engine cleaner helps with the carbon on the piston dome.

yea the red one would be a 38 cc... 2300 av in red... i thing the yellow was a poulan pro 225....i think its 38 cc.. i cleaned both up and put them back together did a gasket delete on the yellow one..... see if they run tomorrow

i have switched a piston....my first time cleaning one or 2 up.... i looked for rings but not sure what the bore size would be so i slapped them back together.....
The bore would be .005" larger than the piston diameters I posted.
The rings for the 225 are still available from Poulan.
